On International Women’s Day, the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut will convene a diverse panel of leaders to discuss how to "MoveFORWARD" on gender equity and equality.
New London, CT: On March 8, International Women’s Day, advocates around the globe celebrate the achievements of women and call for advancing gender equality. Locally, the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT) is bringing together leaders at MoveFORWARD* to share advances, identify obstacles, and -- together with the participation of the audience -- propose strategies to drive effective community action.
Panelists include Starsheemar Byrum of Eastern Connecticut State University, CT State Senator Mae Flexer, Karla Fortunato of the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy, Jim Horan of the Connecticut Association of Human Services, Chief Lynn Malerba of the Mohegan Tribe, and Kris Wraight of Safe Futures. The discussion will be moderated by Paul Choiniere, Editor at The New London Day.
The event is open to the public and will be held at the Norwich Inn in Norwich from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Kindly register at cfect.org/MoveForward.
CFECT, in partnership with DataHaven, recently released a report on the Status of Women and Girls in Eastern Connecticut, which can be accessed at cfect.org/WGreport. The report examines the conditions affecting women and girls in five key areas: economic security, education, workforce development, wellness and wellbeing, and disparities in leadership opportunities.
“Women’s equality is not just a women’s issue. As has been demonstrated in other industrialized democracies, when women have full equity and equality, everyone in the community benefits,” shared Maryam Elahi, President and CEO of CFECT. “Together, we can work to change attitudes, policies and investments toward ones that will advance our women and girls and their communities across Connecticut. We hope that our conversation on March 8th will be dynamic with a diverse representation of community members in attendance.”
